Lynden athletes post admirable times, Sehome, Squalicum place in top 10

FEDERAL WAY – The girls swim and dive season wrapped up on Saturday, Nov. 13, following the state championship meet. Whatcom County’s 2A schools didn’t disappoint.

A two-day meet, the state championships were held at the King County Aquatic Center on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 12-13. The top 16 swimmers from Friday advanced to the finals on Saturday.

Sehome (third) and Squalicum (ninth) each placed in the top 10 as a team, as Lynden finished 22nd and Bellingham came in at 29th out of the 36 schools present.

Thus, the Mariners brought home some hardware.

“Whatcom County athletes were well represented at the state championships,” said Sehome head coach Don Helling. “The 2A meet had participants and point scorers from all of the county 2A teams.”

Leading the pack for Sehome was Florence Lo who placed first in the 100-yard breaststroke and second in 100-yard butterfly. The Mariners’ Martina Klecka also placed first in the dive event with a score of 332.30.

The Sehome relay teams took third in both the 400-yard freestyle and 200-yard medley relays.

Leanne Holleman, Lynden’s head coach, said she values her team’s individual performances and seeing how much they improve with each relay over the final placements.

“Especially at a smaller school with a smaller team, it’s so much more fun for me as a coach to focus on the individual accomplishments,” Holleman said. “It’s more exciting — for me at least, as coach — to be able to go up to my individual swimmers and be like ‘holy heck you just dropped three seconds, what is going on?’ that’s more important to me than the team scores.”

The Lions still posted a solid team score, but the individual times certainly stand out more. Lynden sent six girls to the meet and five swam, Holleman said.

Lynden’s Paige Corkill placed 17th in the 100 and 200-yard freestyle with times of :59.12 and 2:11.53, respectively. Breanna Bogard took 14th in the 500-yard freestyle (5:56.29) and 17th in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:17.68).

Additionally, the Lions 200-yard freestyle relay team of Breanna Bogard, Rachel Jones, Priya Dhaliwhal and Paige Corkill placed ninth at a time of 1:50.69.

Holleman was unable to attend the event as she was welcoming her third child into the world, which she said was the hardest part. She was able to livestream every race and keep in touch with the other coaches that were there.

“These girls are amazing. The girls that got to go down [to state] are incredible young women,” Holleman said. “They all did an amazing job.”
