Nooksack Valley is guaranteed a spot at state
NOOKSACK — The Nooksack Valley Pioneer girls are on a roll this postseason, having won five of their six matchups since the regular season ended early this month.
Undefeated Cashmere is up next, however, and that is a daunting regionals match for the Pioneers this Saturday. Cashmere boasts superstar point guard Hailey Van Lith, and Pioneers head coach Shane Wichers said he hopes to catch Cashmere off guard a little.
“We’ll try putting a few things in that they’re not ready for,” Wichers said.
The Pioneers won’t be straying much from their playing style as of late, with its emphasis on defense, moving the ball and finding the open person on offense.
Win or lose on Saturday, the Pioneers will play again at the state tournament. The 6 p.m. Feb. 29 game against Cashmere will take place at Wenatchee High School, and if the Pioneers can pull off an upset win, they will move to the second round of the state tournament bracket, skipping the loser-out first round. If the Pioneers fall to the Bulldogs, they will compete Wednesday, March 4, in the first round of the tournament.
The Pioneers have a league record of 9-4 and an overall record of 20-6.
