46-year coach went to six title games
LAUREL — Longtime Meridian football coach Bob Ames announced his retirement on Monday.
Ames has coached the Trojans since 1974 for a total of 46 seasons. He compiled a 332-168 record in that span, including three state titles in 1999, 2003 and 2006. His record also includes three state runner-up finishes in 1984, 2000 and 2017, and 18 league championships.
He is the third-winningest coach in the state behind Tumwater’s Sid Otton and O’Dea’s Monte Kohler. Ames was inducted into the WIAA Coaches Hall of Fame in 2011.
In a statement, Ames said it has been an honor to be the head coach at Meridian.
“I am so proud and thankful for all our players, coaches, our school and community, for all they have done to make our program as successful as it has been,” Ames said. “I am also proud of the hard work and sacrifices that all of the above have made to enable our young men to have the opportunities to compete at such a high level for so long.”
