1A playoffs have begun, 2A and 3A are next

WHATCOM — In girls soccer the Class 1A district playoffs are already in full swing, while 2A and 3A postseason play commences Thursday.

Here is the playoff picture for all Whatcom County conferences or classifications:

1A Northwest Conference

TheLynden Christian (8-6-1, 7-5-1) captured its third consecutive top district seed in the 1A ranks. The Lyncs beat South Whidbey 3-0 on Monday to clinch a bi-district berth. The fourth-ranked Lyncs are now in the district title game against second-ranked Kings. The game is set for 7 p.m. on Saturday at Whatcom Community College.

Meridian (3-11-2) earned the second seed and Nooksack Valley (2-14) the third seed. The Trojans traveled to play North Sound champion King’s on Monday ended up losing 4-1. The Trojans now host Cedar Park Christian (Bothell) on at 4 p.m. Wednesday in a winner-to-bi-districts match. The Trojans could still have a chance at bi-districts even with a loss to Cedar Park.

The Pioneers were eliminated by North Sound’s  fourth seed Granite Falls Monday in a 4-0 shutout. Mount Baker (0-17) lost its play-in game 4-0 to Coupeville on Saturday and is done for the season.

The top five finishers at districts advance to bi-district Nov. 4-9.

2A Northwest Conference

Lynden (14-1, 11-1) played Bellingham Monday and continued its amazing winning ways 2-1. That outcome gives the Lions the conference title, the No. 1 seed into district and a first-round bye.

Sehome (11-2-1, 11-1) played Sedro-Woolley on Monday and won 7-3. That win, paired with the Lynden victory, gives the Mariners the No. 2 seed at district and a first-round bye.

Sehome will not overtake Lynden in the RPI rankings, although it was a long shot heading into Monday’s action. Lynden has a head-to-head win over the Mariners.

The top four seeds receive first-round byes and play their first games on Saturday, Nov. 2. Seeds 5-12 all play on Thursday in loser-out matches. All 2A Whatcom County teams are currently in the top-12 of the RPI. The top three finishers at district advance to the state playoffs.

3A District 1

Ferndale (9-5-1, 8-4) played Lakewood Monday and won 4-0. Ferndale was ranked fifth in the RPI and will likely play on Nov. 2. Squalicum (4-7-3, 4-5-3), was ninth in the RPI, although the Storm did beat Anacortes 2-0 on Monday.

The top six seeds play in the opening round of districts on Saturday, Nov. 2. Seeds 7-10 face each other in a loser-out, play-in round at 7 p.m. Thursday.
