LYNDEN — Lynden Christian girls golf hosted a Northwest Conference matchup at Homestead Golf Course on Thursday, May 2, at which Bellingham’s Jada French and Sophia Schmidt tied for the top spot, both shooting scores of 81.

Other top performers were Lakewood’s Malia Schroeder, taking third with a score of 88, and Burlington-Edison’s Sadie Brink with a 95, placing fourth.

Bellingham coasted to victory with 468 points in the match. Burlington-Edison was second at 508, Lakewood third (584), Lynden Christian fourth (589), Nooksack Valley fifth (630), Lynden sixth (677) and Meridian seventh (747).

Lakewood’s Mandy Harrison and Lynden Christian’s Grace Meyer tied for fifth place individually, each scoring a 96.

Meridian’s Chloe Olson shot a 99 on the day, her best score of the season, to place  eighth individually.

“Chloe started off bogey, par, bogey — one of her best starts,” Meridian coach Steve Lawrence said. “Those were key holes because they set the tone for her attitude for the match. I knew it would be a good day once she started well and felt positive.”

Staying in the game mentally is key for anyone’s performance in golf, Lawrence said.

“There are obviously physical aspects to playing golf well, but once you get to a certain level it becomes more mental than physical,” he said. “It is easy to get derailed and lose confidence and spiral downward. It takes a lot of mental strength to compete well, and it is exhausting to maintain that for four to five hours.”

Burlington-Edison’s Emily Larson took seventh with a score of 97.
