Nooksack Valley senior Tyson Mergel was the lone local wrestler to earn first-team all-league honors when the Northwest Conference released its teams on Thursday, Feb. 23. 

WHATCOM — Fifteen local boy wrestlers were honored for their great seasons on Thursday, Feb. 23 when league coaches released their annual All-Northwest Conference teams. 

The lone first-team selection for area schools was Nooksack Valley senior Tyson Mergel, who shared the first-team nod at 285 pounds with Dominick Mack of Squalicum.

Mergel finished eighth at 285 pounds at the Mat Classic on Feb. 18. 

On the second team, Lynden seniors Pablo Martinez (120), Jonathan Lara (152) and Brody Weinheimer (195) were selected. All three Lions qualified for the state meet with Weinheimer taking second. 

Meridian also had a couple of second-team honorees. Juniors Jake Cheney (138) and Manny Sabalza (160) were picked after qualifying for state. 

Honorable mentions for local teams included Nooksack senior Valentin Villalobos at 120 pounds; Mount Baker sophomore Skyler Issacson at 132; Baker senior Jesus Torrero at 138; Meridian senior Noah Richardson and Baker junior Jonathan Sanchez at 145; Meridian senior Oscar Madrigal at 195; Baker senior Braxton Shannon and Nooksack junior Luke Winter at 220; and Baker junior Ethan Valum at 285. 

Richardson and Torrero were the only two non-state qualifiers from the group of honorable mentions.
