WHATCOM ­— A woman who was injured by a vehicle while standing in the Interstate 6 southbound Custer rest area on Oct. 4 has died, the Washington State Patrol reports.

Cynthia L. Stitt, 68, of Marysville, was struck shortly before 3:30 p.m. by a vehicle that then left the scene. Stitt was taken to St. Joseph hospital and died there Oct. 24.

The hit-and-run case remains under investigation.

From nterviews with witnesses at the scene, it is believed the striking vehicle was a red or orange four-door passenger car, possibly a Chrysler 300 or Dodge Charger, said WSP public information officer Heather Axtman.

WSP detectives continue to look at all aspects of this collision and seek any additional witnesses to it, the events immediately before or after, and the whereabouts of the involved vehicle. Anyone with information should contact detective Dan Comnick at 360-757-2008 or Daniel.comnick@wsp.wa.gov. 

Axtman said the color of vehicle could be “burnt orange” or in that “same color family.”

Hhe urges that anyone who may have been on I-5 around the time of the incident and saw any suspicious vehicle or driver, or who may have had a dash camera operating, to contact Comnick.

Investigators look for any additional details to put together the fullest picture of what happened, she said.
