WHATCOM — There’s a new way to enjoy the award-winning poems by local poets in the Sue C. Boynton Poetry Contest.
The Whatcom County Library System has agreed to display this year’s 24 winners of the 13th annual contest on a rotating monthly basis. They were at the Deming Library in July.
This is the remaining schedule: August, North Fork; September, Everson and Sumas; October, South Whatcom; November, Island; December, Ferndale and the Bookmobile; January 2020, Lynden; February, Blaine; March, Point Roberts.
Poems are submitted each March, with winners honored at an awards ceremony in May. This year’s winners were 13 youths and 11 adults, ranging in age from 3 to 90.
Ten Walk Award winners are displayed on plaques outside the downtown Bellingham Public Library. Fourteen more Merit Award winners will be displayed on WTA buses.
The Boynton contest supports itself with proceeds from poetry workshops hosted each year. This year’s workshops in Bellingham will feature:
- on Oct. 26, award-winning Northwest poet Keetje Kuipers and award-winning poet Stefania Heim, who is also a visiting assistant professor at Western Washington University.
- on Dec. 7, current Washington State Poet Laureate Claudia Castro Luna and winner of the 2018 Washington State Book Award for Poetry Lena Khalif of Redmond.
Registration details for the workshops will be announced soon.
