WHATCOM — The vehicle ferry Whatcom Chief serving Lummi Island will depart for dry dock midmorning on Saturday, Sept. 7, and not return until about mid-day Sept. 24, the county reports.

As always, that return date is tentative and dependent on the scale of repairs that are found to be needed at the shipyard. Further confirmation of the date of return to service will occur as dry dock progresses.

Regular  service on Sept. 7 will begin with an early  first  run at 6  a.m.  and  will continue  to  run until the boat is taken for  dry dock. The  last  two departures providing regular vehicle service made by the Whatcom Chief that day will be: 9:20 a.m. from Lummi Island to Gooseberry Point; and 9:30 a.m. from Gooseberry Point to Lummi Island.

County Public Works projects that  the  first  departure of the contracted  passenger-only ferry will be at approximately 4  p.m. Sept. 7 from Lummi Island.
