Lynden, Lynden Christian, Mount Baker, Nooksack Valley all participated

WHATCOM — In support of seniors who saw their final athletic season canceled this spring by COVID-19, schools across the county and state lit up their stadiums exactly at 8:20 (20:20) p.m. last Friday evening, April 17.

Lynden, Lynden Christian, Mount Baker and Nooksack Valley high schools all participated in “Be The Light” Washington initiated by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association to recognize the 2020 high school senior student-athletes.

Lights were shining in Whatcom County at 8:20 p.m. while cars of parents and students rolled by the stadiums with voices cheering and horns honking.

Coaches, teachers and administrators were on hand at Lynden and Lynden Christian schools holding signs or waving flags for the spring sports.

More than 150 schools across the state participated in the event, according to the WIAA.

Rites of passage for seniors such as graduation ceremonies and proms, as well as the range of spring sports, have all been canceled because of the coronavirus shutdown. “Be The Light” Washington became one way people are celebrating the class of 2020.
