WHATCOM — Snapper Shuler Kenner Insurance recently gave $5,000 to Open Hands, which provides food pack to local elementary school children.
Open Hands supplies non-perishable and easy-to-prepare food on weekends and school holidays to children attending 10 schools in Bellingham, Custer, Everson, Ferndale, Nooksack and Sumas. Every Friday during the school year, nearly 800 students receive a bag of food containing two breakfasts, three lunch/dinner meals and two small snacks.
With schools now closed by the coronavirus, the age requirement has been dropped, according to Larae Tjoelker of Open Hands. Volunteers now drop the bags of food off each Friday morning at all 10 schools and school staff members distribute the bags to more than 950 kids.
SSK Insurance received the $5,000 from Liberty Mutual and Safeco Insurance as part of an Emergency Community Support Grant to help independent agents give back to their communities during the COVID-19 crisis.
“Our team volunteered at Open Hands for an afternoon last summer stocking shelves and packing bags and were amazed by this local nonprofit,” said Bobbi Green, a 28-year SSK Insurance employee.
