Public outreach coordinator to be added
WHATCOM — A changing of the guard is taking place at the county Sheriff’s Office.
Friday, May 31, was the last day on the job there for Undersheriff Jeff Parks, after 37 years of service for Whatcom County.
Parks started working with the media at times as a patrol sergeant in 1989 and then regularly as the detective sergeant in the mid -90s. He thanks those who were part of that working relationship over the years.
“I am glad to be wrapping up on a very positive note,” Parks said, and he noted especially the outcome of a trial in the 1989 death of Mandy Stavik.
The replacement person is Doug Chadwick, currently chief criminal deputy in the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office. “He will do an outstanding job as the new second-in-command,” Parks said.
Chief Kevin Hester remains available to respond to daily inquiries as well as Sheriff Bill Elfo, and John Gargett at emergency management division head.
The Sheriff’s Office is also currently recruiting for a public outreach coordinator who will “take our media communications to the next level,” Parks said.
Chadwick said he will do his best to continue to provide timely response to inquiries from news organizations, and he looks forward to having a new coordinator for public outreach in place soon as well.
“This position is intended to be a daily conduit for the media to receive and request information from the Sheriff’s Office, as well as assist us with community outreach and engagement,” Chadwick said.
