OLYMPIA — The North Cascades Highway is closed for the winter.

Washington State Department of Transportation officials made the call on Friday, Nov. 13, due to a forecast of heavy snowfall and risk of avalanche.

The annual closure is in place between milepost 134 east of Diablo Lake and milepost 171 at Silver Star Gate near Mazama.

State Route 20 is the northernmost route across the Cascade Mountain Range in Washington. It is closed every winter when weather, snow conditions and avalanche danger threaten the safety of drivers and maintenance crews.

Reopening in the spring is usually accomplished by early May.
