LYNDEN — The VFW Auxiliary 9301 will participate in Wreaths Across America Day on Dec. 19.
WAA is a national non-profit founded in 2007 to expand the annual wreath-laying that happens each year at Arlington National Cemetery, begun by a Maine businessman in 1992. Last year, 2.2 million wreaths were placed in cemeteries around the county (240,000 at Arlington).
The VFW Auxiliary will take part to honor veterans here in Lynden/Whatcom County, said Jerrie Luginbill, secretary-treasurer of the post. Some 25 cemeteries in Washington State are participating, but only Lynden Cemetery in Whatcom County!
Until Dec. 19 the local VFW is fundraising to place a wreath at every veterans’ gravesite in the Lynden Cemetery. So far, 109 wreaths are acquired toward the total 250 veterans interred in the cemetery.
