SKAGIT — A 62-year-old Ferndale man died in an early-morning  two-vehicle crash in the 300 block of Cain Lake Road on Monday, Oct. 7.

The identity of the man was given by the Washington State Patrol on Tuesday, after notification of relatives, as Eric C. Howard.

The crash happened at about 12:45 a.m. and drugs or alcohol were believed to be a factor, the patrol said.

A 2002 Ford Econoline van driven by Mark Kamphouse, 31, of Maple Falls, was northbound on the road and a 1998 Mazda Protege driven by Howard was southbound when the Ford crossed the center and struck the Mazda head-on, the patrol said. Howard was not wearing a seatbelt at the time.

The crash remained under investigation Monday and charges could be filed, according to the WSP report.
