Sumas, Ferndale City Council races are exactly tied

WHATCOM — In the end, it all comes down to the flip of a coin.

Incumbent Ferndale City Council member Teresa N. Taylor had trailed challenger Paul Shuey by just one vote heading into Monday’s recount of the 2019 general election race.

When the recount was over, according to Whatcom County Deputy Auditor Diana Bradrick, Taylor had one more vote in her column.

“There will be a coin toss to determine the winner at the Canvassing Board meeting tomorrow afternoon,” Bradrick said.

The same goes for the deadlocked Sumas City Council Position 3 race, in which incumbent Todd Daniels remains tied with challenger Deborah Morgan at 176 votes.

Both coin flips will occur at the Whatcom County Canvassing Board meeting scheduled for 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 4, at which the results of the hand recount will be certified.
