Multiple agencies join in rescue at Nugent’s Corner
WHATCOM — County Sheriff’s deputies and other local responders did a successful joint rescue operation Thursday morning, June 18, on the Nooksack River at Nugent’s Corner.
Calls came in to 911 at 9:25 a.m. reporting an overturned boat in the river near the 3600 block of Cedarville Road. The victims, holding on to the boat, floated another mile downstream. Washington State Patrol troopers located two people in the river and reported their location to other responders.
The victims remained with their boat when it became hung up on a river bar. Volunteers with the Whatcom Search and Rescue swiftwater rescue team were able to reach the stranded boaters and assist them to shore with help from Sheriff’s deputies and U.S. Customs and Border Protection units.
Whatcom County Fire District 1 also was involved.
The victims were in the water for more than an hour. They were treated for slight hypothermia and declined further medical attention.
Sheriff Bill Elfo said the operation was a great example of successful teamwork among agencies.
