WHATCOM — A 19-year-old from Bellingham died by drowning in Canyon Lake northeast of Deming last weekend, the county Sheriff’s Department reports.
The victim was identified in a Tuesday press release as Marcus Poulos.
This is the account given by sheriff’s chief deputy Kevin Hester:
About 1 a.m. Saturday deputies were dispatched to a possible drowning at Canyon Lake. The reporting person said he and a friend drove to the end of North Fork Road Friday afternoon and then rode bikes to Canyon Lake. Arriving about 8 p.m., they intended to camp overnight.
The pair reportedly ingested some drugs that caused Poulos to become confused and show abnormal behavior. The victim ran through some thick brush and entered the lake where he could be heard thrashing around in the water. His friend said he tried to swim out to him, but Poulos disappeared in the water and could no longer be seen or heard. After searching for a while, the friend rode his bike to an area where he could get cell phone reception and he called 911.
Search and rescue volunteers from Whatcom County Dive Rescue and Summit to Sound S&R responded to the scene along with Whatcom County Fire District 14. The subject was not located during searches on Saturday and Sunday, but was ultimately located by divers on Monday morning shortly after 9:30 a.m. The victim was located about 50 yards offshore and at a water depth of approximately 27 feet.
“Search conditions in the lake were reported to be poor, with very limited visibility and a number of logs creating additional hazards,” Hester saids.
