WHATCOM — The Northwest Avalanche Center has issued an avalanche warning for the Northwest zone of the Cascades including the Mt. Baker area and the Mt. Baker Highway corridor.
The avalanche danger is high. The dangerous conditions developed Friday, Jan. 1, from a storm bringing heavy rain, high-elevation snow and very strong winds.
The advisory claims that large and potentially deadly avalances, whether natural or human-triggered, are likely in many area.
Travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended. Avalanches can run long distances and into valley floors and flat terrain.
Similar avalanche danger may exist at locations outside the coverage area of the Northwest Avalanche Center.
