WHATCOM — Two Bellingham 16-year-olds have also been arrested in connection with the drug-deal shooting that occurred in Lynden City Park Feb. 5.
Lynden Police made the arrests late Tuesday, Feb. 11, and the pair were held in county juvenile detention and were expected to be charged with robbery and first-degree assault, said Lynden Police Chief Steve Taylor by email.
“The investigation into this incident is still active, and more arrests may be made,” Taylor added.
That brought to three the number of arrests made in the case. Landon Gudde, 19, of Bellingham, was arrested Feb. 9 and faces two felony charges of possession of a controlled substance and criminal conspiracy to commit robbery.
At about 10:40 p.m. on Feb. 5, Lynden police were notified of a shooting at City Park on Depot Road. The 31-year-old gunshot victim was transported first to a Bellingham hospital and then Harborview of Seattle.
In reconstruction of what happened, police say three from Skagit County came to the Depot Road park in a deal to sell narcotics to a Bellingham man. Shortly after, two masked men, at least one of them with a firearm, approached and began to steal items from the Skagit trio’s vehicle. When two ran from the vehicle, the third remaining was shot in his right biceps area. The friends went first to the nearby Lynden Fire Station before police were contacted and also other law enforcement agencies got involved.
The Whatcom County Jail bookings record shows three additional charges proposed against Gudde — related to weapons, first-degree assault and harassment — besides the two of Lynden, and his bail amount was set at $80,000.
