Viola Mae (Groen) VanderYacht, age 94, departed this life on June 6, 2019, to assume her new life in heaven as promised by our Lord and Savior. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother.
She was born in Hull, North Dakota, on Aug. 26, 1924, to Richard and Nell Groen. Soon after graduating from Lynden High School, Vi married the love of her life, Dale Vander-Yacht on Nov. 11, 1942.
Vi was a creative homemaker, loving her role as a wife to Dale and then as a mother to their six children: Larry (Sharin), Carole (Alvin) Starkenburg, Ron (Janet), Darryl (Carole), Rick (Patty) and Duane (Bonnie). She felt being able to raise them in the Lynden area was a blessing. Vi enjoyed being involved in the activities her family brought into her life. She was a Sunday school teacher, room mother at her children’s school and BSF group leader; she was active in Second Christian Reformed Church.
Her favorite thing was being with family. She planned many fun Christmas gatherings, Seattle overnights, vacations in Chelan and fun times at her home on Lake Whatcom.
Vi is survived by her brother Delvin Groen, from Lynden.
Vi was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Dale; daughter-in-law Carole VanderYacht; sister Jean and brother-in-law Rich Rutgers; sister-in-law Marilyn Groen; grandchildren Philip and Grant Starkenburg and Wade Eugene VanderYacht; and great-grandchildren Stephanie Rose and Jake Kroontje.
A Celebration of Life will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 14, in the Mt. Baker Rotary Building of Lynden, preceded by a private burial in Monumenta Cemetery.
Memorial gifts may be made to Hearts That Hope, 1824 Front St., Suite C, Lynden WA; Second Christian Reformed Church; or Whatcom Hospice.
Arrangements are entrusted to Gillies Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
