Stella DeJong Som passed into Glory on Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2020, at the age of 92.
Stella was known as a beautiful pianist and organist. She wanted to be at every family activity; she enjoyed being around people and a part of all the activities surrounding her.
Stella was born Dec. 7, 1927, in Rock Rapids, Iowa, to parents Evert and Alice (Westra) Vinkes. When she was 7, her family moved to Lynden where she attended Ebenezer Christian School and Roeder School through the 8th grade. As a young girl she loved playing baseball. After graduating 8th grade, Stella was needed for milking and chores around the family dairy farm on Nolte Road.
Stella met a handsome young man named William DeJong at church youth group. They were married on April 27, 1948, and had five children. Stella and William loved singing duets and were charter members of Grace Baptist Fellowship in Lynden. William passed away on March 21, 1973.
After a time Stella met John Som through a Christian singles club meeting in Stella’s home. They were married on March 25, 1977, and Stella gained six step-children. John passed Dec. 26, 2010.
Stella loved crocheting and sewing quilts for her grandkids. She enjoyed a garden club and a TOPS Club, taking on the role of bookkeeper and treasurer. Stella worked for the Bookey’s egg farm and volunteered at The Hope Chest second-hand clothing store. She enjoyed talking politics, reading health books and genealogy.
Stella was preceded in death by her first husband, William DeJong, and second husband, John Som; her parents; and granddaughter Brandi Hanowell.
She is survived by children Alice (Dave) Wiggins, Bernice (Richard) Martinez, Clara (Les) Doerksen, Delores (Arlan) Holleman and Eldon (Ranae) DeJong; 12 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; brother Albert Vinkes; and numerous other family members.
You are invited to join Stella’s family and friends for visitation at Gillies Funeral Home from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6. The graveside committal will be at 2:15 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, in Monumenta Cemetery, followed by the memorial service in Third Christian Reformed Church, 514 Liberty St., Lynden, at 3 p.m.
