Murella (Koert) De Vries, of Lynden, died July 20, 2019, at age 85 of natural causes.
Murella was born Dec. 5 1933, to Peter and Dorothy Koert in Lynden and graduated from Lynden High School in 1951. Murella graduated from Western Washington University with a teacher’s certificate and taught (junior high) in Anacortes and Vancouver, Washington, for 35 years. She was an accomplished violinist and received a music scholarship to Western Washington University and played in the Portland Symphony.
She married Symon De Vries in June 1955; he died in February 2003. She then returned to Lynden and enjoyed her Homestead Golf Course home and often golfed with friends. Murella also was interested in preserving Lynden’s history and volunteered many hours at the Lynden Pioneer Museum, cataloging its artifacts. She was a member of Sonlight Church of Lynden.
Murella is survived by her brother, Peter; longtime close friend of the Koert family, Christine Roos; two sisters-in-law, Sally Reehoorn and Corrie De Vries; and nieces and nephews.
She appreciated the nursing and staff assistance given her at Lynden Manor, the Christian Health Care Center and the St. Francis of Bellingham. She is to be buried in Evergreen Memorial Gardens cemetery in Vancouver, alongside her husband Symon.
At her request, no memorial services are planned.
