Marilyn Smith

Marilyn Helen Peterson Smith, of Laurel, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2019, at St. Joseph hospital.

Marilyn was born in Hammond, Indiana, on Aug. 9, 1935, to Roy and Nellie (Van Gorp) Peterson. As a young woman, living in San Diego, Marilyn felt called to begin work with the Moody Bible Institute. During her 34-year employment at Moody, Marilyn was able to provide encouragement and minister to both her friends and missionaries.

Marilyn married Brenton Smith on April 16, 1994, in Oak Park, Illinois, and moved out to the Pacific Northwest to begin her married life. Marilyn was blessed with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She would always take time to play with them. Whether it was baseball, Barbies, puzzles, checkers or a family game of Uno, she was always willing and eager to jump in. Marilyn had a memory like a steel trap. She would remember not only the name and family members of everyone she met, but also significant events and heartaches in each of their lives. Marilyn would often pray for specific needs of family, friends, missionaries and people in the community. Her kindness, compassion and love for God showed through her spirit in her day-to-day actions.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her father Roy and her mother Nellie.

Marilyn is survived by her husband, Brenton, of the family home; her brothers Roger (Gail) and Ron (Janet); grandchildren Alison Smith, Jennifer (Eric) Johnson, Jonathan (Heather) Smith, Matthew (Monica), Colin (Erin) Smith, Megan (Gary) Mellema, Lindsey (Klayton) Lewis and Timothy Smith; great-grandchildren Josiah, Sevrin, Ethan, Iris, Isla (Smith), Benjamin, Gemma, Josette (Smith), Ephraim, Ezra, Ziva, Rivka, Tirzah, David (Lewis), Zale, Andrew (Johnson), Mia, Laila (Mellema), Riley (Smith), Jarrod, Tessa, and Marcus (Smith), Celia and Marcos (Rodriguez).

Family and friends are invited Saturday, Aug. 17, from 10 to 11 a.m. for a time of viewing and visitation in Gillies Funeral Home of Lynden. Following visitation, we will go to Monumenta Cemetery for an 11:30 a.m. graveside committal. Then at 1 p.m. we will gather in Covenant Grace Reformed Church, 1227 Loomis Trail Rd., for Marilyn’s memorials service.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Gillies Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
