Leota Mae Vander Molen, age 90, of Sumas, joined her beloved Heavenly Father on Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2021.
Leota was born April 14, 1930, in Lynden to parents Bernard and Nellie (VanWeerthiuzen) Van Diest. She had three brothers and three sisters.
Leota attended Sumas Elementary School. She married Donald Vander Molen on Sept. 22, 1948, at Sumas Christian Reformed Church where she was a charter member. Together they had seven children.
Leota loved children and for many years ran an in-home licensed daycare in Sumas. She had a keen sense of math and all things numbers. Leota had an open-door policy and was known for always welcoming family and friends to the house.
Leota was preceded in death by her husband, Don, in 1986; sister Judith and brother Gary; and two grandchildren.
Leota is survived by children Delores, Janet (Don), Duane (Patricia), Arlene (Case), Valerie (Mike), Renee (Orv) and Randy (Linn); 20 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by her sisters Marge and Ruth and brothers Bern and Alvin.
A private family graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 22, in Monumenta Cemetery, followed by a 12:30 p.m. public memorial service in Sumas Christian Reformed Church.
