Lifelong Lynden resident John J. Honcoop passed away at home on Friday, Jan. 8, 2021. He was very outgoing with a great sense of humor and a big smile. John loved everyone he met and always welcomed everyone into his home.
John was born March 29, 1933, in Lynden to parents Joe and Gerter (Schouten) Honcoop. He attended Lynden Christian School through the eighth grade.
John served two years in the U.S. Army, rising to the rank of corporal.
John started his working career as a farmer, then spent 16 years at Mt. Baker Plywood and finally was a landscaper.
John married Esther Vandenacre on June 12, 1957, in Lynden. Together they had eight children. Family was most important, besides his love for the Lord.
John is survived by his wife of 63 years, Esther; children Jim Honcoop, Darrell (Esther) Honcoop, Darla (Warren) DiLorenzo, Barbara (Leon) Vreeman, Lisa (Brian) Kooiman and Duane Honcoop; son-in-law Glen Johnson; 20 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; sister Marie (Tony) Van Rooyen, brothers Anthony (Joyce) Honcoop and William Honcoop.
John was preceded in death by children Linda Johnson and Susan Honcoop.
A private graveside service will be held in Monumenta Cemetery at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 14.
