John Edgar Bonwell III went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, May 21, 2020.
John was born Sept. 28, 1930, in Vallejo, California, to parents John Edgar and Gladys Ellen (Patrick) Bonwell Jr. He was known for being honorable and loving to those closest to him and a genuine patriot.
John graduated from Alameda High School and then the University of California-Berkeley with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering. With this training he worked for the City of Berkeley, retiring after 30 years.
John was active in San Francisco Bay Area camera clubs and was frequently asked to judge important competitions. He and his wife traveled to the British Isles and treasured a genealogy tour from Montana to Nebraska. John enjoyed numerous camping trips to Idaho for stream fishing.
During the Korean conflict he joined the U.S. Air Force. As this was during the Cold War, his group was handpicked to carry the atomic bomb if it had been needed. John fondly remembers those years with a license plate on his old Mercedes B36GUNR.
He was married to Marian Ellen Lallman for 49 years before her passing.
John reacquainted himself with Marian’s best friend, MaryAlice Brown, and after a brief courtship they were married in 2008 in Lynden, Washington.
John will be greatly missed by his sweetheart of 11 years, MaryAlice.
The family thanks Visiting Angels and other caregivers who made it possible for John to stay home in his declining years.
He will be interred in the Sacramento California National Cemetery.
