Joanne Vogel, early in the morning of Sept. 8, rose to her Lord God Almighty at the age of 86.
Joanne (Jantje) was the eldest daughter born of Oscar (Oebele) and Anna (Antje) Tolsma-Boonstra on Feb. 12, 1934, in the Netherlands. In 1948 the Boonstra family of 12 immigrated to America on the S.S. Leerdam freighter looking for a brighter future for the children: Pieter 15, Jantje 14, Folkert 12, Janke 11, Pietje 10, Sietske 8, Oene 4, Trijntje 2, and Harm 8 months old.
Joanne married Frank Vogel on March 12, 1954. She was a devoted wife for 62 years and mother of four children: Alvin, Elaine, Wayne and Cindy. Joanne, a dairy farmer homemaker, prepared for the lean winter months through canning and freezing local produce. She read her Bible daily and prayed on her knees every evening before bedtime. She sought her Lord through many trials.
Joanne is survived by: son Alvin of Bellingham, daughter Elaine (Ken) Oostra of Parma, Idaho, son Wayne (Joyce) of Lynden, daughter Cindy (Jack) Louws of Bellingham; 12 grandchildren, Kim (Evan) Einfeld, Kristy (Darrin) Longoria, Jason (Kristin) Oostra, Cindy (James) Cook, Lucas (Gina) Harrison, Joanna Jones, Gina (Caleb) Butler, Anthony Vogel, Deborah Vogel. Jodi Louws, John (Rachel) Louws, Nathan (Torey) Louws; 33 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; and many foster children.
She is survived by siblings Peter, Janet, Pauline, Theresa (Don) Kamphouse, Herman (Eleanor) Boonstra; sister-in-law Shirley and former sister-in-law Sylvia.
Joanne was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Frank, brothers Fred and Andrew, sister Sandra (Loren) Harsch, brotherd-in-law Gerrit Honcoop, Tony Honcoop and Billy Ray.
The family thanks the staffs of Meadow Greens, Christian Health Care Center and Whatcom Hospice for their compassionate care of Joanne in her final years.
