Dortena “Tootie” Van Mersbergen went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, Nov. 12, 2020. Her love for family, God and Jesus as her Savior were central in her life.
Tootie was born on March 29, 1932, in Orange City, Iowa, to Andrew and Tillie Berkenpas. At age 10 she moved to Lynden with her family. She attended the Orange City Christian School and, after moving to Lynden, Lynden Christian School.
On April 12, 1950, Tootie married Lewis Van Mersbergen. They were married 60 years. Together they raised their family on a dairy farm at the corner of Bender and Pangborn roads.
Tootie’s love for growing flowers of all colors brought her great joy, with roses being her favorite. She had a gift in music, playing hymns on the piano and singing in the choir. She was a member of Third Christian Reformed Church and enjoyed attending the women’s Bible study.
Tootie was preceded in death by her parents; husband Lewis; daughters Linda Lee and Debbie Biesheuvel; brother Harvey Berkenpas; and brothers-in-law Marvin (Carol) Van Mersbergen, Ron Timmer and Ken Tiesinga.
She is survived by sons Ken (Florina) Van Mersbergen, Jim (Bev) Van Mersbergen and Don (Natalie) Van Mersbergen; brother Gerald Berkenpas; sister Alma Tiesinga; brother-in-law Sherwin (Carolyn) Van Mersbergen; sister-in-law Donna Timmer; 14 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
Tootie will be honored with a private graveside service in Monumenta Cemetery at 1:15 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. in Third Christian Reformed Church.
