Colleen Spoelstra graduated on to meet her Lord Jesus Christ on Saturday, March 21, 2020, at the age of 93. She was known as a prayer warrior to her family and friends.
Colleen was born Jan. 26, 1927, in Dolores, Colorado, to parents William Alec “Shorty” and Nellie (Uptain) Goodwin. She attended Burlington-Edison High School and for a time Western Washington State College. Colleen married Harold Turk on Aug. 17, 1944. Together they had three children: Eugene, Kathy and Laurie. Harold passed Dec. 3, 1960.
Colleen later married Ben Spoelstra on Jan. 3, 1964. Colleen gained five more children: Shelly, Brent, Sonja, Kirk and Rochelle. Ben and Colleen were missionaries in Texas, Michigan and Spain, to orphanages in Tijuana, Mexico, and finally Sierra Leone, Africa, leaving there when the civil war started.
Colleen loved adventure, supported her husbands with a positive attitude, and was a bit feisty yet sweet to be around. She canned everything in sight for her family and was known for her yummy bean soup on bread. Colleen loved to read and was an avid gardener.
Colleen was preceded in death by her first husband, Harold Turk, and siblings Naomi Martin and Gary Goodwin.
She is survived by husband Ben Spoelstra; children Eugene Turk, Kathy Turk Cramer (Joe), Laurie Turk Baron (Jim), Shelly Spoelstra Smits (Jim), Brent Spoelstra (Maribeth), Sonja Spoelstra Denny (Lew), Kirk Spoelstra (Katherine) and and Rochelle Spoelstra; 19 grandchildren and many great- and great-great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by her sister Darlene Todahl (Rick).
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial will be in Bayview Cemetery, Bellingham.
