LAUREL — A Meridian High School student was arrested Monday on suspicion of third-degree rape in Whatcom County Superior Court.

Josue Nathan Miranda-Nolasco, 18, was released from custody Tuesday on his own personal recognizance (promise to appear).

“We take the safety and security of our students very seriously,” Meridian Superintendent James Everett said in a statement. “We want every student in our schools to feel safe. We appreciate a student came forward to talk to a trusted adult.”

Everett said due to student privacy laws, the district is unable to share any information regarding the discipline of Miranda-Nolasco.

He said because it’s still an ongoing investigation, the district is working with the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office and the families involved.

“When we learn of a crime, including sexual assault, we report it immediately to the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office,” Everett said. “With respect to what we have in place for victims, our counselors and administration are available and work closely with the student and family to support their needs.”

Miranda-Nolasco’s arraignment is scheduled for June 14.
