Western-themed ‘Folly’ brings participants to locations around Ferndale
FERNDALE — The City of Ferndale’s annual scavenger hunt is back in 2021, and it returns with some decidedly western fare.
The Great Ferndale Frontier Folly kicks off Friday, July 2, when clues will be released via the city’s Facebook and Twitter pages, as well as CityOfFerndale.org.
Scorecards are available at https://www.cityofferndale.org/public-works-department/parks-and-recreation/recreation-2/the-great-ferndale-frontier-folly, or they can be picked up at Ferndale City Hall.
The web address also shows off a short film created to introduce the city to the Great Ferndale Frontier Folly.
“We’re excited about that,” said Riley Sweeney, city spokesperson. “I’m excited because I got to shoot a silent film. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”
The clues released by the city will lead participants to locations around Ferndale, where participants can find large cow banners representing the goal of the scavenger hunt.
Most clues, but not all, will be located in Ferndale parks. Each banner has envelopes attached to it featuring word scrambles. The scramble can be copied into score cards to solve the riddle of how a local farmer’s cow went missing.
The first clue will be released Friday, July 2, and then every Tuesday and Friday after that through July 20, for six clues in total. Find the cows and complete other activities, such as talking with a veteran, finding an unusual plant or animal or visiting the police station to score points. The highest-scoring teams win cash prizes, toys and more.
The Great Ferndale Frontier Folly marks the next event in a series of Summer of Fun festivities. The July Food Truck Friday will be at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, July 2, at the south end of Pioneer Village near STAR Park.
Participating food trucks this time around are Mobile Mouth Hole, Mix Masala, Cicchitti’s Pizza, Simmering Tava, Kona Ice and Sage Against the Machine. Another Food Truck Friday is set for Aug. 6.
Next after the July Food Truck Friday will be an outdoor showing of the classic film “Labyrinth” at 9:30 p.m. on Friday, July 9, in Pioneer Village.
The final outdoor movie of the summer will be “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” July 16.
Masks are required for unvaccinated attendees of these events, and social distancing is required for all.
