Family Night Out features Dietz magic, music, raffles

LYNDEN ­— Sterling Dietz, a 2009 graduate of Lynden High School now with his own magic show in Cabo, Mexico, will fly home to be part of a benefit of Be The One at North County Christ the King church on Friday, Feb. 14, with doors opening at 5:30 p.m.

  The full evening involves music, raffles, food items, games and prizes, also kids’ face painting.

  Attendees can specify which school of those being served they want their donating to benefit, said Lisa Reynolds, program coordinator.

  Many Whatcom County restaurants, businesses and individuals are providing food for the concessions, raffle items, volunteering and giving financial assistance. 

  On the music side, there will be performers from Bellingham and Lynden. These include Andrew Hicks and Gabe Adams, who played guitar and sang at their LHS graduation a few years ago, and Michael and Dana Booker, who are on the worship team at Bellingham Christ the King. They will perform starting at 6:30 p.m.

  At 7 p.m. the cast of Lynden High School’s “Guys and Dolls,” directed by Tina Miller, will preview two songs from the upcoming musical. Then on stage with Dietz will be students from his magic camp who will perform what they have learned.

  Dietz is an international champion of magic in both close-up and stage settings, since he started his magic career at 13 years old in Lynden.

  He has helped raise money for causes such as Relay For Life, Susan G. Komen Foundation, YMCAs, churches and youth groups. He has also become a speaker at various youth organizations.

  Sterling married his high school sweetheart, Kaylee Hicks, also of Lynden, last March in Cabo. She is a professional dancer, make-up artist and aesthetician and has become an integral part of Sterling’s magic camps and performances.

  Be The One is now in the Lynden, Ferndale and Nooksack Valley public school districts with its “one adult, one student, one hour” theme for mentoring students. Lynden Christian is getting on board in 2020.
