LYNDEN — The Roar & Soar 5K keeps growing as a fundraiser benefitting the public elementary schools.

The walk/run event was held May 4 on the theme “May the Fourth Be With You,” with start and finish at Lynden High School. From about 200 at the first running in 2015,  “there were around 800 participants this year ranging from babies in strollers to senior citizens walking,” said committee member Casie Burt.

Last year, $18,000 was raised and was distributed equally among the three Lynden public elementary schools: Isom, Vossbeck and Fisher. This year, Lynden Academy was added as a recipient and $23,453 was raised, which will be apportioned based on student numbers.

“Better together” is the Roar motto. The money goes to each school’s PTA group to use for after-school enrichment programs, field trips, family events at the schools, etc., Burt said.

The primary sponsor is the Mt. Baker Rotary Club, although 44 local sponsors/businesses give cash donations or prizes for the event.
