Christine Vander Veen

Christine “Stientje” (Roorda) Vander Veen, the oldest resident of Meadow Greens Retirement Center in Lynden, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 21, 2009, after a long life of 105 years.
  She was born on May 19, 1904, to Nicholas and Anna Roorda in Grijpskerk, Groningen, the Netherlands. Christine married John Vander Veen on Oct. 7, 1926, and in 1947 they emigrated to Lynden with their five sons and two daughters. As the only daughter of aging parents, her departure to the U.S. was most difficult.

Lyle Sweet

  Lyle Sweet, age 74, of Ferndale, passed away on Monday, June 29, 2009.
  A memorial service will be held on Monday, July 6, 2009, at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Ferndale.

John Discant III

  John William Discant III, of Ferndale, passed away on Monday, June 22, 2009. He was 57 years old.

Fred Furman

  Fred Furman passed away after a long illness on June 13, 2009, in Tillamook, Ore., at the age of 57.
  Fred was born in Bellingham on July 4, 1951, to Faye and Mabel Buckner Furman, and was a graduate of Meridian High School. In 1984 he married Kenda in Bellingham, and in 1990 they settled on the Oregon Coast.
  Fred was preceded in death by his father, Faye Furman. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Kenda, of Rockaway Beach, Ore.; his mother, Mabel, and Russ Mills of Burnaby, B.C.; children Alana and husband Jack, Erik and wife Amber and Seneca and husband Xavier; two brothers, Dale Furman of Stanwood and Art Furman and wife Carla of Custer; a sister, Peggy Joy and husband Rollin of Bellingham; grandchildren Cole, Jacksen, Raeann, Tanner, Nesa, Alec, Aiden and Tristen; numerous nieces and nephews; and two very special friends, Allen Pearson and Tom Brown.

Troy Marshall

  Troy Donald Marshall, of Bellingham, passed away on Wednesday, June 17, 2009. He was 73 years old.
  Troy was greatly admired and loved.

Christina VanderVeen

  Christina VanderVeen, age 105, was taken to be with her Heavenly Father on Sunday, June 21, 2009, at Meadow Greens in Lynden.
  Funeral services will be scheduled for next week.
  Arrangements are under the care of Gillies Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Lynden.

Corina Smith

  

Corina Smith, of Lynden, passed away on Wednesday, June 10, 2009. She was 74 years old.
  Corina was devoted to her husband, Ray, and was a hard-working Southern lady. She enjoyed being a part of the Pajama Corporation of America team in Manchester, Tenn., for 27 years, and loved gardening and the outdoors. Corina’s sisters and brothers were an especially important part of her life.

Earl Tjoelker

    

Earl Tjoelker was born on Sept. 1, 1954, and passed away April 17, 2009.
  Earl’s family would like to thank everyone who has been there for the past four months with cards, food, prayers, plants for the garden, donations to charity or anything that was done in Earl’s name -– all are appreciated.

Frank Mullick

  Frank William Mullick, 86, passed away peacefully at his home in Lynden on April 2, 2009, with his wife, Ethel, at his side.
  He was born on Feb. 16, 1923, in San Pedro, Calif., and graduated from Grant Union High School in Sacramento. Frank honorably served his country during World War II, Korea and Vietnam as a member of the United States Navy. He was a proud Plank Holder in the Navy’s distinguished VP-9 Squadron during the Korean War. After retiring from the Navy as a Chief Petty Officer, he worked for Lockheed Missiles and Space in Mountain View, Calif., for another 20 years before completely retiring in 1986.

Conrad Van Beek

   

Conrad Van Beek passed away on June 6, 2009, of an apparent heart attack.
  Born on May 11, 1939, in Minnesota, the family moved to the Lynden area in 1940. He joined the National Guard after graduating from Lynden Christian School in 1957. He settled in Seattle after the military, where he met his wife Judy of 48 years. They have two children, Ada and Earl. He retired nine years ago from iron working and spent his time working around the house and helping others.
