NOOKSACK VALLEY — When Nooksack Valley baseball coach Scott Gelwicks accepted the position to take over the Pioneers this season, he knew he wouldn’t have an easy task in rebuilding the program.

He understood that there were plenty of challenges to be faced taking over a club that had gone 4-17 overall in 2012 and finished in last place of the Northwest Conference.

So far in 2013, however, Nooksack Valley has looked like a completely different team, sitting at 5-5 overall and in fourth place in the NWC standings.

“If you told me at the beginning of the season that we’d be at .500 after 10 games, I would have told you ‘I’ll take it,’” Gelwicks said with a laugh. “It’s not just that we’re 5-5, but I think there have only been two games this season where I thought we didn’t compete.
