Nooksacks fight disenrollment from tribe

DEMING — Four Nooksack Indian Tribe members have filed suit in Tribal Court to try to stop tribal leaders from disenrolling 306 people, or about 15 percent of total membership of the Deming-based tribe.

The plaintiffs claim they do have at least the one-fourth degree Indian blood required for Nooksack membership and they ask for an injunction to “prevent cultural genocide” by the Nooksack Tribal Council and other Nooksack officials.

The first court hearing on the matter, filed March 15, may come on May 1.
