Law enforcement hunted fugitive near Sumas Tuesday

SUMAS — One man was in custody and another was on the run Tuesday afternoon as the U.S. Border Patrol searched the foothills east of Sumas for the armed suspect.

At 9:10 a.m. Tuesday, Border Patrol agents assigned to the Sumas station encountered a pair of camouflaged individuals in the Columbia Valley (South Pass Road area) east of Sumas, according to Border Patrol agent Eric Dorais. One of the subjects fired at the agents and fled while the other was apprehended. No injuries were reported as of 2 p.m.
