It’s the one remaining tree at the corner of Fifth and Front streets, but it won’t be there much longer as city revitalization happens quickly around the Waples Mercantile Building project in the next few weeks. The 30-foot tree pulls up curb and street and is in the way of utilities work and eventual bollards, bricks and, yes, new trees on the reconfigured four corners of the intersection, said the city’s Mark Sandal. The tree has special meaning for immediately adjacent Dickson Medical Clinic, however, as it was there when the clinic started and the Dicksons think it could be preserved.
